Don’t buy the jetbook. The firmware has to be reloaded nearly every time you sync it with the computer. Here you can see it has crashed… it crashed immediately when the first person tried to open a book and could be not be recovered by resetting. The owner had to take it home and reload the firmware. It has many outstanding features but is practically unusable due to the bugs.

The Kindle is the only one, since it’s manufactured by Amazon.
The Kindle is the only one because it uses a unique file format that only the Kindle can read.
Basically, all other e-readers will use the ePub format.
Non-Kindle e-readers can also use library e-books that are either in an ePub or PDF format. The Kindle cannot because of an issue between Amazon and Adobe involving the DRM limiting the use of library e-books.
I’d also recommend that you look at the Sony Readers and the Barnes and Noble Nook. They’re very popular e-readers as well.
The Kindle is the only dedicated ebook reader that allows you to buy & use Amazon ebooks without additional, unapproved-by-the-seller steps. The Kindle app is available for mobile phones, PCs, iPod & iTouch, and possibly the newer Android touchpads, so if you get them an app-driven device to use for ebooks, they could use the Kindle app in addition to apps that will read ebooks from other stores.
The Kindle only reads mobi, pdf and txt ebooks, and only reads DRM’d ebooks (with copy protection) from Amazon’s store. If you get a Kindle, you’re not entirely locked to buying from them, but that’ll be the only place you can buy mainstream books. However, DRM-free ebook stores like Smashwords, Baen and part of Fictionwise will work on any ebook reader.
Whatever ebook reader you choose, make sure they know there’s a large number of free ebooks at places like Project Gutenberg ( http://gutenberg.org ) and Feedbooks ( http://www.feedbooks.com ) and the Baen free library ( http://baen.com/library/ ); they don’t have to run out of good things to read if money gets tight for a while.
My teenage daughter has a Kindle and I can’t pry her away from it. She mostly reads from fanfiction.net instead of downloaded ebooks, though.
