The Best eBook Reader: How to Find One Thats Right for You
Article by Massimo Pastore
When it comes to finding the best eBook reader there is no definitive answer. All it really means is finding the best eBook reader for you. You need to think about where youll buy your eBooks, whether you need any extra features, if you have any additional needs when it comes to the size or display of the words, and so on. Here is a brief guide to some of the features you can compare to help make your decision that little bit easier.
1) What Formats Can Your eReader Handle?
The good news is that the top electronic book readers are now generally on a par when it comes to flexibility of formats. Models such as the Kindle and Sony eReader allow users to read standard eBook formats (ePub) as well as other digital documents, including PDF files. However, depending on your needs you may also want to compare any other formats the reader can handle, including images or audio files. The bestselling eBook readers can now generally handle MP3 files and more.
2) Input Device
Next, youll want to consider the input device that the eReader uses. The best eBook reader will be comfortable to use, so think about what you are looking for in a device. Do you like the newest gadgets and technology? Or do you just want something simple? For example, the Kindle makes use of a keyboard and buttons, where as the Sony eReader and Barnes & Noble Nook make use of touch screens. Some readers also make use of a stylus, making input simple.
3) Ability to Add Notes
The ability to annotate eBooks is a feature thats particularly useful for a number of people: students who are studying the latest textbooks, businessmen who need to jot down ideas on the go, or avid readers who want to remember what inspired them! Check that your eBook reader has features for annotation.
4) The Reading Experience
Arguably, the best eBook reader means one that can match the real reading experience as closely as possible. The good news is that the top readers all come pretty close in this respect, making use of the latest e-Ink technology for a screen that does not put any strain on the eyes. However, it helps to take a close look at some videos of the models in action before making your decision.
5) Physical Features
eBook readers are generally slim and sleek – weighing less than an average book! Compare screen sizes, weight and width if these are features that matter to you. If you have any requirements regarding display, and want a reader that is easy to read, you should also check technical specifications to ensure there are functions included that allow you to change font, size and display settings.
6) Added Extra Features
Lastly, each make of eBook reader will have extra features to try and entice you to buy the product. Go with whatever works for you. For example, some readers may have organizational features, some have the ability to listen to MP3s, and they may also have different modes of connectivity. The Kindle, for example, has the ability to connect to the Kindle store and download books wherever you are, whereas the Nook connects directly to Barnes & Noble.
Conclusion
As you can see, eBook readers can do a lot more than simply display your books! Choosing the best eBook reader for you is an important decision, which is why you should compare technical specifications and functions carefully before you buy.

Sony has several good e-readers, although they’re all monochromatic.

3 year old and 5 year old love it. Already had to get a replacement though!!,
We got these for our 3 year old and 5 year old in the car. We had them for 4 days. On day 4 my daughter’s V-reader would turn on in “engineering mode” and would not load games or anything. We tried calling the company, but they are a Mon-Fri 8-5 customer service. I sent an email that night (Sunday) and had a return email by 8:30 Monday morning with ideas of how to fix it. None of these worked and we had to return it to where we purchased it for a replacement. It’s been almost 2 weeks since then and we haven’t run into any more problems.
Pros:
1. You can plug headphones in to it
2. My favorite feature is that my 5 year old can use the pen and touch each word in a story and read it word by word – she only needs to touch the words she doesn’t know and can read the others on her own. (She tells me that it first reads you the full page and you can then either turn the page or read it word by word by touching each word with the pen).
3. Very easy to navigate – my 3 year old can do it without any assistance.
Cons:
1. It goes through batteries like crazy. You can buy an AC adapter for it, but one is not included.
2. The cartridges are expensive – $20 each.
3. The battery pack is so tight on one that I can barely get the batteries out when I need to. On the other the compartment is so loose that the batteries often get loose causing the reader not to work until I open the battery compartment and fix it for my kids.
4. The “pen” is not connected to the reader at all and is easily lost. It has a storage space, but is not attached by a string or anything.
Overall we’re very happy with the purchase – great alternative to a portable DVD player in the car!

|A must buy for Christmas,
We tried this item on a demo at a local store. My son loved it because it was just like Mommy’s Kindle. We both enjoyed the annimation feature. My son has insisted that I help him ask Santa for this for Christmas this year and two weeks after trying it out is still talking about it.
To address a previous reviewer’s concerns, it is animated, but it also shows and highlights the words of the story. Also, unlike with the tag and other reading toys, the page turning option does not appear until the entire passage has been read. I’ve noticed that this discourages my little button pusher from skipping the reading portion and just looking at the pictures.
I’ve done some research online about this item , and the Vtech website will soon have an ebook library similar to the Kindle. The website says that many of the books offered there will be free. Considering that the Vreader is expensive itself, having free books offered is definitely welcome.
